Check out these tips for cooking and baking with nuts.

  • Store nuts in the freezer in resealable plastic bags or jars. This will keep them fresher and prevent them from turning rancid so quickly.
  • It’s easier to chop whole nuts right after toasting, while they’re still hot. The nuts are pliable and won’t fly around the work surface.
  • When chopping nuts in a food processor for baking recipes, add a couple tablespoons of sugar to them (decrease the amount of sugar in the recipe). This will help prevent the nuts from turning into nut “butter.”
  • Toast nuts for recipes by tossing them in a skillet over medium heat until fragrant and lightly browned. Keep an eye on them and stir or toss often to prevent burning.
  • Rub the skins off toasted hazelnuts by placing the nuts in a small mesh bag (like those that cherry tomatoes come in) and rubbing vigorously between your palms.
