Beef cube steak is the perfect cut for this recipe- it's top or round steak that's been pounded to tenderize the meat.  Seasoned, coated with flour and fried until crisp, then served with creamy sausage gravy- it's a Southern-style comfort food classic!

How to Make It

Step 1

Place the flour into a shallow dish.  Beat 1/4 cup milk and the eggs in another shallow dish with a fork or whisk.

Step 2

Season the beef as desired.  Coat the beef with the flour.  Dip the beef into the egg mixture, then coat with the flour again.

Step 3

Heat the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat.  Add the beef in batches and cook for 8 minutes or until well browned on both sides and cooked through.  Remove the beef from the skillet, cover and keep warm. Pour off any remaining oil.

Step 4

Add the gravy and remaining milk to the skillet and heat to a boil, stirring to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.  Serve the gravy mixture with the beef.

Recipe Tips

  • Serving Suggestion: Serve the beef and gravy with hot mashed potatoes.
  • Recipe Note: For a more traditional flavor, season the flour with about 1/4 teaspoon paprika and about 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder before coating the beef.

    Chicken Fried Steak with Campbells Country Style Gravy

    I feel VERY SORRY for the cooks out there that don't know HOW TO COOK!!!!. This product used with Beef Cubed Steak is not only absolutely an inexpensive wonderful meal for your family. MY problem is the difficultly of getting the Campbell's Country Style Gravy. If you have the canned gravy, you can contact me and I'd be more than happy to help you to SUCCESS!!!!

    Chicken-Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy

    I followed the directions exactly and all of the breading fell off mid-cooking. I read another review and followed the suggestions of double flour and egg dipping as well to absolutely no avail. Although this recipe was very easy to prepare and cook, I was extremely disappointed with the results and wouldn't recommend it.

    Chicken-Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy

    My family loved this recipe! The only problem is that the stores in my area do not carry that kind of canned "soup". So I had to use a powder packet. I also followed Ted K.'s recommendation of double-dipping the steaks and I did that. It worked wonderful! I'm making it again tonight.

    Chicken-Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy

    The recipie confused me in that just dipping the steaks in flour did nothing to give them that coating that normal country fried steak should be. What this recipie fails to provide is that you have to dip them in flour, dip them in egg then dip them back into the flour again to give them that country fried steak coating.
