    cups firmly packed light brown sugar

How to Make It

Step 1

Heat the oven to 350ºF.  Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with vegetable cooking spray.  Stir the flour, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl.

Step 2

Beat the brown sugar, shortening, milk and vanilla extract in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is creamy.  Beat in the eggs.

Step 3

Reduce the speed to low.  Add the flour mixture and beat just until combined.  Stir in the chocolate pieces and pecans, if desired.  Spread the dough in the baking pan.

Step 4

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.  Let cool in the pan on a wire rack.  Cut into 36 (1 1/2 x 2-inch) bars.

Recipe Tips

  • Ingredient Note: If you choose not to add the pecans, increase the chocolate pieces to 1 1/2 cups.

    Easy to make

    I thought this recipe would be good because it had 2 of the ingredients I love in desserts - chocolate and nuts. It did not rise as much as I thought it would, but it was still good. My husband is not much of a fan of pecans though; I may leave them out next time I fix this or try a different kind of nut.

    Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

    So great! I substituted margarine for the Crisco and they still came out great! I was a little nervous because once spread in the pan it seems thin- but they rise up well!
