    teaspoons chopped fresh dill weed

  • 1/3

    cup Crisco® vegetable shorteningor Crisco® all vegetable shortening stick

    cup shredded yellow Cheddar cheeseor Swiss cheese (about 2 ounces)

How to Make It

Stir the flour, baking powder, dill and salt in a large bowl. With a pastry blender, two knives or a fork, cut in the shortening until the mixture looks like coarse meal. Stir in the cheese. Add the milk and stir just until the dough holds together. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead it lightly. Roll the dough to 3/4-inch thick. Cut with a floured biscuit cutter, pushing straight down and place the dough rounds on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 425°F. for 12 to 15 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.

Recipe Tips

  • Flavor Variation: For Cinnamon Biscuits: Follow the directions for cheese biscuits omitting the cheese and dill. Reduce the salt to 1/2 teaspoon and milk to 1/2 cup.  Sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon and bake as above.

    Herbed Cheese Biscuits

    If you add milk until it reaches the consistancy of glue, you can also make drop biscuits.
