medium onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
cloves garlic, crushed
pound ground beef
teaspoon black pepper
can (about 14.5 ounces) Italian-style diced tomatoes, drained
pound green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces, cooked (about 2 1/2 cups)
package (13.75 ounces) instant mashed potato flakes, prepared according to package directions for 8 servings
Heat the oven to 350°F.
Cook the onion, garlic and beef in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat until the beef is well browned, stirring occasionally to separate meat. Season with salt and black pepper. Pour off any fat.
Place the beef mixture into a 2-quart casserole. Spoon the tomatoes over the beef mixture and top with the green beans. Spoon the potatoes over the green beans and brush with the egg.
Bake for 30 minutes or until the beef mixture is hot and bubbling.
