FAQ

Are your cans and cartons recyclable?

Our Swanson® products are packaged in steel cans, aseptic cartons, and microwavable sipping cups. The steel cans we use are 100% recyclable and contain up to 35% recycled steel. Our steel cans are among the safest, most convenient, affordable and environmentally sustainable forms of packaging. Our aseptic cartons are recyclable. Please refer to the Carton Council recycling logo on Swanson cartons at RecycleCartons.com to check your local carton recyclability. Our sipping cups are currently not recyclable. We are actively working to improve the sustainability of our sipping platform.

Product is past the Best Used By Date, can I still use it?

To ensure that our consumers enjoy the best quality product, we print a “Best Used By Date” on each container to indicate the expected shelf life of a product. We recommend that the unopened product be used prior to this date to ensure the best flavor, texture and overall quality. Once opened, follow directions on the label for storage and disposal. If the product is not stored properly, the shelf life will be shortened. We recommend that you store non-refrigerated items in a cool, dry place where temperatures rarely exceed 70º F.

Where can I find recipes?

Please visit https://www.campbells.com/swanson/recipes/ for mouthwatering recipes & more.

When I twisted the screw cap for the very first time, the carton appeared to have been already opened and the safety sealing layers of the carton were already pierced. There was no additional pull tab. Is this normal and safe?

Yes, when first opened, an integrated cutting ring pierces the safety sealing layers and pushes the flap down; with one single twist the safety seal is broken. No additional pull tab is needed. For more info, visit: https://youtu.be/JNmHykseZgg

How does cooking with Swanson broth make my food more flavorful?

Rich, delicious flavor is the standard for Swanson. In the culinary world, chefs regularly make double stock versus a single stock in order to have a richer flavor foundation to make the best food. At Swanson, we feel the same way. Starting our broths with double stock yields a more robust, well-rounded chicken flavor that carries through to your final dish.

Are any of your broths or stocks gluten free?

Swanson® offers a range of gluten free broth & stock products. We have a strict two-step process for validating a product as gluten-free and ensuring that it meets FDA’s criteria for the claim. First, we verify all the ingredients are gluten-free, then we analyze the finished product to make sure it meets all relevant requirements. Additionally, we test finished products periodically to ensure continued compliance. Please see the complete list of our gluten free offerings at: https://www.campbells.com/swanson/gluten-free/

What is the difference between stock, broth, and bone broth?

Is there MSG in your broths or stocks?

We don’t add Monosodium Glutamate as an ingredient. We do use yeast extract, which is a natural flavor derived from yeast to add a savory taste. Yeast extract contains a small amount of naturally occurring glutamate.

Do your broths / stocks contain artificial colors and flavors?

Swanson® broths and stocks are made with simple, real ingredients. We don’t add artificial colors and flavors. Swanson® only uses natural flavorings and extracts to add a depth of taste.

Do you use GMO ingredients in your products?

None of the Swanson® stock or broth products use GMO ingredients.

Can I drink the broth?

Yes! All of our Swanson broths can be enjoyed as a beverage. Swanson Sipping Bone Broths are specially made to be consumed as a beverage. Please visit https://www.campbells.com/swanson/sipping-bone-broth/ to see a complete list of our sipping varieties. We recommend heating broths before drinking them.

Can I heat your broth and stock products in a microwave?

Yes, you can heat the broth/stock products in the microwave. You should follow the instructions on the package and heat in a separate container. Our new Sipping bone broths are packaged in convenient microwavable, on-the-go cups, and so can be heated in the container itself.

Is there onion or garlic present in Swanson® stocks and broths?

Some of our broths and stocks do contain onion and/or garlic. We recommend that consumers always check the ingredient statement and evaluate the product based on the statement. Historically, onion or garlic could have been under the broader ingredient listing of spices or natural flavors. Swanson now lists the presence of onion and garlic on all our product labels no matter how small the amount. Depending on when you bought your product, the label may not have the onion and garlic listed separately. If you are uncertain as to whether your specific product contains onion or garlic, we’d love to help. Please email us.

Do you offer lower sodium options?

Yes, we offer a range of products with reduced salt or no salt added. Lower sodium products let the natural flavors shine through and are perfect for those who want more culinary control when it comes to seasoning their dishes. Please see the complete list of our lower sodium offerings at: https://www.campbells.com/swanson/lower-sodium/

How do I use Bone Broth?

Swanson® Bone Broth is great for Sipping and Cooking. • Sipping: Bone broth can be sipped on its own or with herbs and seasonings. Although great at room temperature, many consumers prefer to heat bone broth either in the microwave or on the stovetop before consuming. • Cooking: Bone broth can be used to add rich, full-bodied flavor from naturally occurring collagen proteins to recipes calling for broth or stock. We now offer Sipping Bone Broth in flavors such as Chicken Bone Broth, Chicken with Lemon & Rosemary Bone Broth, and Chicken with Ginger & Turmeric Bone Broth. Our Sipping Bone Broths are packaged in convenient microwavable, on-the-go cups.

What if my Bone Broth gels?

Bone broth may gel in colder temperatures due to the high concentration of stock. This gelling will disappear when heated.

How is the level of collagen different in stock, broth, and bone broth?

Stock, broth and bone broth are all made with some amount of animal bones. During the cooking process, collagen gets extracted from the bones. While stock and broth will contain some amounts of collagen, bone broths typically contain higher amounts due to longer cooking times.
