Mouthwatering, traditional flavors come together in this satisfying soup reminiscent of grandmother's kitchen.

Heat the oil in a 6-quart saucepot over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook for 3 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.
Stir the broth, 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, cabbage, potato and ham in the saucepot and heat to a boil. Reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for 30 minutes or until the potato is tender. Stir in the parsley and caraway seed, if desired.
Very Good, Quick & Easy as is - Incredible with a couple of mods
Made this several times, some as is, some with mods - always great! The best version used leftover spiral-cut ham instead of packaged cooked hamsteak, added a bit more of it, as well as extra potato. This soup does seem to be sensitive to the amount of potato. You can get by with less than 2 cups but seems to affect taste, adding more makes it better. Plan on making this a couple of times after baking a ham.
wonderful cabbage recipe
I used more potatoes and more ham and did use the caraway seeds.. they were just what the recipe needed to put it over the top.
Comfort Food Made Easy
This was just awesome I added the leftover spiral ham in stead of the ham steak. Replaced the vegetable oil for unsalted butter, but also added celery to the onions when sautéing.
Hearty and comforting.
I used a little more cabbage and potato and only one onion. It was really good. Even my kids who don't like cabbage liked it.
Fast and Easy to throw together
I love this soup and make it frequently. I like everything about it.
