Move over steak sauce.  Our recipe for Steak with Chipotle Cheese Sauce is a great way to turn ordinary steak into something special.  Tomatoes and onions simmer in our cheddar cheese soup to give it a savory flavor while chipotle chile powder gives this sauce a smoky kick.   This easy recipe for Chipotle Cheese Sauce can be made ahead of time and then warmed up while you grill the steak making this dinner extra easy to get on the table.


  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large white onion or 1 large sweet onion, coarsely chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 1 can (10 1/2 ounces) Campbell’s® Condensed Cheddar Cheese Soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle chile powder
  • 2 medium tomato, coarsely chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 2 pounds beef skirt steak or beef flank steak (1-inch thick)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)


  • Step 1

    Heat the oil in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook for 5 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.

  • Step 2

    Stir the soup, milk, chili powder and tomatoes in the saucepan. Reduce the heat to low.  Cook until the mixture is hot, stirring occasionally.

  • Step 3

    Season the beef with salt and pepper, if desired.  Lightly oil the grill rack and heat the grill to medium. Grill the beef for 15 minutes for medium or until desired doneness, turning the beef over once halfway through the grilling time. Thinly slice the beef.  Spoon the soup mixture over the beef and sprinkle with the cilantro, if desired.
