Everyone knows how to make a burger, right? Well, we have a trick up our sleeve with these Caramelized Onion Burgers that gives them extra flavor and great texture, perfect for smothering in rich, sweet caramelized onions! It's caramelized onion and burgundy wine concentrate, bread crumbs and egg, added to the beef mixture. The concentrate is also added to the cooked onions to bump up the flavor. Serve the burgers on soft rolls topped with just the onions, or add Swiss cheese for a French onion spin. You can also add a quick homemade rosemary aioli (see the tip for how) to really make it restaurant-worthy!
Step 1
Heat the oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook and stir for 1 minute. Stir in the water and 1/2 tablespoon concentrate and cook for 10 minutes or until the onions are deep brown and caramelized, stirring occasionally and adding more water to the skillet as needed (add if the onions start to look dry). Stir in the vinegar and cook for 1 minute. Remove the onions from the skillet, cover and keep warm.
Step 2
Thoroughly mix the beef, egg, panko and remaining 2 tablespoons concentrate in a bowl. Season with black pepper (no need to add salt). Shape the beef mixture into 4 burgers. Heat the skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers for 4 minutes. Turn the burgers over and cook for another 4 minutes or until done.
Step 3
Place the burgers on the bottom bun halves and top each with about 1/2 cup caramelized onions.
