Just when you thought you'd seen every possible version of mac & cheese, you realize there's one missing- Skillet Sausage & Pepper Mac & Cheese. The mashup of sausage and peppers and mac & cheese is the one you've been waiting for - two comfort foods that are even better together. And it's ready in only 30 minutes, since the penne cooks right in the skillet! Just brown the sausage, then add peppers and onions, penne and seasonings. It all cooks together in a creamy sauce made with condensed Cheddar cheese soup, a shortcut that adds amazing creaminess and flavor. Stir in more cheese (shredded Cheddar!) at the end and Skillet Sausage & Pepper Mac & Cheese is ready to eat!
Step 1
Cook the sausage in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until well browned, stirring often to separate meat. Pour off any fat. Remove the sausage from the skillet, cover and keep warm.
Step 2
Add the broth, soup, garlic powder and onion powder and heat to a boil. Stir in the penne and frozen peppers and onions. Reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 15 minutes or until the penne is tender and the sauce has thickened, stirring occasionally.
Step 3
Add the cheese and the sausage and stir until the cheese is melted. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
